Q: What is the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth?
A: The National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) documents the deviant or delinquent behaviors of U.S. youth ages 12 to 16.
  • The 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY), which was conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, interviewed 9,000 youth who were between the ages of 12 and 16 at year-end 1996 and asked whether or not they had engaged in a variety of deviant or delinquent behaviors.
  • Plans are to interview members of this cohort annually to track changes in delinquent and criminal activity over the life course.
