Q: What is the trend in the child maltreatment victimization rate?
A: The victimization rate in 2006 was 10% below the rate in 1990.

Note: A child was counted as a victim each time he or she was found to be a victim of maltreatment.

  • The 2006 child maltreatment victimization rate of 12.1 per 1,000 children under 18 was 10% below the rate in 1990 (13.4).
  • An estimated 905,000 children were the victims of maltreatment in 2006, up 5% from the number of victims in 1990 (860,000).
