- In 2005, students ages 1218 were victims of an estimated 404,300 serious violent crimes; more than one-third (34%) of these incidents took place at or on the way to school.
- Between 1992 and 2005, the rate of nonfatal violent crime victimization declined susbstantially both in and away from school. The rate of serious violent victimizations for students occurring away from school fell about 68% during this period, while at schools the rate fell about 50%.
