Addressing the Problem of Juvenile Bullying
(FS 200127) June 2001
Fact Sheet, 2 page(s)
Ericson, N.

Discusses juvenile bullying, a form of violence among children that has come under intense scrutiny amid reports that it may have been a contributing factor in recent school shootings and that it may be related to other forms of juvenile violence. This OJJDP Fact Sheet defines bullying, noting that it can take three forms: physical, verbal, and psychological. The Fact Sheet also describes a recently published report by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and summarizes the report's findings on the long- and short-term effects of bullying. The Fact Sheet concludes with a discussion of the Bullying Prevention Program, an initiative designed to reduce bullying by intervening at the school, classroom, and individual levels.
