2001 Tribal Youth Program

Tribe: Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo Tribal Youth Program

Project: Tribal Drug Court

Category: II. Intervention for Court-Involved Youth; III. Improvement to Tribal Juvenile Justice Systems

State: TX

Summary: The Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo is implementing a culturally relevant community service program designed to provide compensation and healing to the victim. Elders oversee the construction of an horno (oven), which the youth use and maintain to bake bread as part of their community service. The bread is then distributed to needy senior citizens. Yard work and house painting are also provided for elders as part of youth’s community service. Two police officers are to be assigned to the tribal court (and compensated) to increase their involvement with court- involved youth. A part-time probation officer is being increased to full time. The probation officer collaborates with the drug court and participates in cognitive behavioral treatment training.
